Prologue
“What was it like to create an artwork at Human Brilliance event this year?”
“Let me think a moment.”
A moment passes.
“Well?”
“Okay, I’ll tell you. But first, could you do me a small favour?”
“A favour?”
“What would you like to have? Coffee? Tea?”
“It’s Friday night. I’ll go with scotch.”
“Ah, excellent choice! Pour yourself a dram, and I’ll begin.”
Inspiration
I stepped into my hotel room and laid my backpack on the floor. I scanned the place with my eyes, and a framed print of a masterful artwork bounced at me from the wall above the bed. This photograph of Helene Schjerfbeck’s Virgin Mary, after El Greco stopped me right where I was. Its image drilled into my mind instantly, and I had to stay still, to appreciate its tender beauty for a moment.
She created this artwork in 1942. The next day, in 2026, I would be making an artwork in Human Brilliance; an event that brings people together from art, business, and science.
It would be a portrait of Human Brilliance character, based on attributes suggested by participants. They would be given on five themes: Genre, Era, Colour, Character Trait, and Superpower. So, the final artwork would be a collaboration between me and the participants.
I examined Schjerfbeck’s mixed-media piece more closely. I recognised the raw lines drawn with charcoal, the colours added with aquarelle. I saw the confident touch of a virtuoso artist. Fast-paced study, guided by instinct and appreciation of the old master’s work before her.
I thought: “I’d really like to bring some aspect of this work into the upcoming portrait.”
The portrait
My philosophy in creating this piece was to include as many ideas from participants as possible, without breaking the portrait with too much information.
Not everyone had the possibility to give suggestions, due to the high number of participants and limited time, but those who got the opportunity used it with admirable care!
Genre
This turned out to be the combination of Kalevala and musical (with the world of honeybees as a unique touch!). In my mind, Kalevala is close to musical with its poetic rhythm, while wilderness with its inhabitants are an inseparable part of the epic. Bright colours, the woman’s sparkling dress, and the bees conversing with her convey the genre.
Era
The portrait takes place in the first half of the 20th century, as the suggestions I chose were “1940s” and “timeless”. I view the early 1900s as a timeless era; especially the fashion of that time was way prettier than today. The woman’s hairstyle, makeup, jewellery, and dress all indicate the chosen era. Here, I used a reference photo from the 1930s to match the generation.
Colour
Colour was the only section where I could include all suggestions. Human Brilliance theme colours, gold and turquoise, were suggested, alongside with pink and honey. These I could spread across the piece, with pink background pushing the woman forwards, while turquoise and gold dance from her dress, eyes, and hair all the way to the light hitting her skin.
Character Trait & Superpower
The attributes suggested for these themes resembled each other so much that I present them here as one. Eventually, these decided the character’s gender, as I view the suggested traits largely feminine (especially in the light of all the previous themes). However, here I chose traits which, at the first glance, seem to contradict each other. Virtues such as kindness, presence, and sensibility meet bravery and strength. I wanted to show that these qualities don’t exclude each other, but are essential parts of Human Brilliance. The Portrait’s Lady has learned to use them in union, and only thus she can reach the golden light greeting her from the future.
Epilogue
“Did you enjoy your scotch?”
“It was most delightful! But you missed something.”
“I’m all ears.”
“Did you include elements from Helene Schjerfbeck’s Virgin Mary after El Greco?”
A long pause.
“It seems I continued her story.”

“Miltä tuntui luoda taideteos tämänvuotisessa Human Brilliancessa?”
“Annapas kun mietin hetken”
Hetki kuluu.
“No?”
“Ookoo, kerron. Mutta teeppä pieni palvelus ensin.”
“Palvelus?”
“Mitä haluaisit? Kahvia? Teetä?”
“Noh, nyt kun on perjantai ilta, niin taidan mennä skottilaisella.”
“Oivallinen valinta! Kaada itsellesi siemaus, niin aloitan.”
Inspiraatio
Astuin hotellihuoneeseeni, ja laskin reppuni lattialle. Kävin huonetta läpi katseellani, ja kehystetty printti taidokkaasta teoksesta hyppäsi silmilleni sängyn yllä olevalta seinältä. Valokuva Helene Schjerfbeckin teoksesta Neitsyt Maria, El Grecon mukaan pysäytti minut siihen paikkaan. Kuva siitä porautui mieleeni saman tien. Hetken ajan minun täytyi pysyä paikoillani, ja vain ihailla sen haurasta kauneutta.
Helene loi tämän teoksen vuonna 1942. Seuraavana päivänä, vuonna 2026, minä olisin luomassa teosta Human Brilliancessa; tapahtumassa, joka tuo yhteen ihmisiä tieteestä, taiteesta, ja bisneksestä.
Tekisin muotokuvan Human Brilliance -hahmosta, perustuen osallistujien ehdottamiin piirteisiin. Ne annettaisiin viiteen teemaan liittyen: Genreen, Aikakauteen, Väriin, Luonteenpiirteeseen, ja Supervoimaan. Niinpä lopullinen taideteos olisi minun ja osallistujien yhteistyön tulos.
Tutkin Schjerfbeckin sekatekniikalla luomaa kuvaa lähempää. Tunnistin hiilellä tehdyt karheat viivat, ja akvarellilla lisätyt värit. Näin virtuoosimaisen taiteilijan varman otteen, jota oli ohjannut kokemuksen tuoma vaisto. Nopeatempoinen tutkielma hänen ihailemansa vanhan mestarin työstä.
Ajattelin: “Haluaisin todella saada jonkun elementin tästä luomuksesta tulevaan muotokuvaan.”
Muotokuva
Filosofiani tätä teosta luodessa oli sisällyttää mukaan niin monta osallistujien antamaa ideaa kuin mahdollista, ilman että kuva alkaa hajoamaan liian monesta aiheesta.
Kaikilla ei ollut mahdollisuutta antaa ehdotuksia, johtuen osallistujien isosta määrästä ja rajoitetusta ajasta, mutta he jotka tämän tilaisuuden saivat, käyttivät sen ihailtavalla huolellisuudella!
Genre
Genrenä toimii Kalevalan ja musikaalin sekoitus (mehiläisten maailman tarjotessa mukavan loppusilauksen!). Omassa mielessäni nämä maailmat heijastavat toisiaan; Kalevalan tarinankerronnassa on runollinen rytmi, ja erämaa asukkeineen on erottamaton osa eeposta. Genreä kuvaavat teoksen kirkas värimaailma ja naisen juhlava pukeutuminen, sekä hahmon kanssa keskustelevat mehiläiset.
Aikakausi
Muotokuva sijoittuu 20. vuosisadan ensimmäiselle puoliskolle, sillä valitsemani ehdotukset olivat “1940-luku” sekä “ajaton”. Näen 1900-luvun alun ajattomana aikakautena; erityisesti muoti oli mielestäni tällöin huomattavasti tyylikkäämpää kuin nykypäivänä. Naisen hiustyyli, meikit, korut ja mekko viittaavat valittuun ajanjaksoon. Käytin apuna referenssikuvaa 1930-luvulta, jotta kykenin tuomaan esiin viittauksia valittuun aikakauteen.
Väri
Tämä aihepiiri oli ainoa, jossa sain kaikki ideat mukaan teokseen. Human Brilliancen teemavärit, turkoosi ja kultainen, tulivat esille vahvasti, mutta myös pinkki ja hunaja. Ripottelin värit ympäri teosta; käytin taustaan pinkkiä, joka auttaa tuomaan naista paremmin esiin, samalla kun turkoosi ja kulta tanssivat hänen asustaan, silmistään ja hiuksistaan aina hänen iholtaan heijastuvaan valoon asti.
Luonteenpiirre ja Supervoima
Näihin aiheisiin ehdotetut ominaisuudet muistuttivat toisiaan siinä määrin, että esitän ne tässä yhdessä. Viimeistään nämä päättivät hahmon sukupuolen, sillä näen ehdotetut piirteet suurelta osin feminiinisinä (erityisesti, kun ottaa huomioon aiemmat aihealueet). Mutta päätin valita ominaisuuksia, jotka ovat ensikatsomalta ristiriidassa toistensa kanssa. Hyveet, kuten lempeys, läsnäolo ja herkkyys kohtaavat vahvuuden ja rohkeuden. Halusin näyttää, etteivät nämä sulje toisiaan pois, vaan ovat välttämättömiä osia Ihmisbriljanssissa. Teoksen nainen on oppinut käyttämään niitä yhdessä, ja vain siten hän voi saavuttaa kultaisen valon, joka tervehtii häntä tulevaisuudesta.
Epilogi
“No, maistuiko skottilainen?”
“Se oli oikein maukasta! Mutta sinä unohdit jotain.”
“Olen pelkkänä korvana.”
“Saitko jonkun elementin omaan luomukseesi Helene Schjerfbeckin teoksesta Neitsyt Maria, El Grecon mukaan?”
Pitkä tauko.
“Näyttää siltä, että jatkoin hänen tarinaansa.”
